More Favorites of 2016 – Jeff Rosenstock

I certainly had no plans to do this, but in the days since I posted my favorites of 2016 list, I have been inundated with incredible music that I either missed completely or didn’t give adequate time to. With the exception of a new Krallice album that just came out today and peeled the skin from my butt, my favorite metal albums of the year are pretty well set. This series of addendums is for the more adventurous listeners among you. I mean, except for Jeff Rosenstock, because who doesn’t like a good punk record? Speaking of which…

Frosty’s Favorites of 2016

screenshot-at-dec-14-08-06-34

This list is presented in no particular order, with the exception of my number one album, and is genre-inclusive. Simply put, these were my favorite albums and EPs of 2016. As a special bonus, I also included some other categories after the music, just for poops and hahas.

Oh, and please feel free to tell me how wrong I am on Twitter @CelticFrosty. Enjoy!

Episode 5 – Gilead Media

gilead

In this episode, I focus on Gilead Media, a Wisconsin-based DIY label that can’t seem to stop doing everything right. Over the last year in particular, the label has released a slew of top tier albums that has kept its name on the lips of every metal fan and critic within earshot. Just this month, Gilead, partnering with 20 Buck Spin, put on the first annual (I hope) Migration Fest in Olympia, WA, which had one of the sickest festival lineups I’ve ever seen. Look at this madness:

Episode 4 – I, the Rifffinder

Slabdragger

I didn’t feel much like talking in this month’s episode, so I let the riffs do all the work, a decision which I’m sure none of you will be sad about. This is a collection of what I believe to be the best of the best riff-makers in 2016, with a little something extra thrown in at the end that I couldn’t resist including.

Episode 2 – Tech Death

contrarian

Welcome to Episode 2 of the Celtic Frosty Podcast. This month I’m focusing on tech death because, quite frankly, it’s a genre of metal to which I’ve always pompously turned up my nose. I wanted this show to be a challenge for me and a source of undiscovered treasures for my listeners. I can’t think of any way to do that without getting my hands dirty.

Episode 1 – Icelandic Black Metal

misthyrming

This is the inaugural episode of the Celtic Frosty podcast. I don’t have an actual microphone, so the vocals were recorded using a pair of Apple earbuds (woof). But this show is all about the music, so I hope you will forgive the roughness around the edges.

Episode 1 focuses on the rising black metal scene in Iceland.
